These days, the cornhole game seems to be popping up everywhere you look. It's not just popular in America either. People are playing the game all over the world. The game has official governing bodies, competitive tournaments, arcade games, a television show and even a movie about the game.
How to Play Cornhole
If you're interested in playing cornhole, you'll be glad to know that the rules for playing the game are fairly simple and straightforward. The game is played with 2 teams of 1 to 4 players (players can be any age or size as long as they can throw a 1 pound beanbag/corn bag). Cornhole is played with eight bean bags, four of each color and one Cornhole board. The Cornhole board needs to be placed on a flat surface. According to the rules, the Cornhole bags should have 1 pound of dried corn, beans, or rice. Cornhole bags should be 6" by 6".
Cornhole Rules for Scoring
- 3 points if you get the bag through the hole.
- 1 point if the bag gets on the board.
- 1 point if the bag is hanging into the hole.
- 1 point if the bag is hanging off the edge but doesn't touch the ground.
- The team with the highest score adds the difference of the two scores to their score.
- The team who wins gets to throw first in the next round.
- If the scores are tied the first toss stays with the previous team.
Cornhole Rules Concerning Fouls
- If the player's foot goes past the line in front of the board it is a foul.
- It is a foul if a player takes another player's turn.
- If the bag doesn't land on the board and it touches the ground it is a foul.
- If the bag is hanging off the edge of the board and touches the ground it is a foul.
Rules for Playing Cornhole
- The game is started with a coin flip or by playing rock/ paper/ scissors to choose who goes first.
- Partners stand at opposite corners of the board from each other.
- Each player or team of players has four bags of one color.
- All eight bags begin at one end of the board
- The starting player or team throws a bag at the opposite corner of the board.
- Players may throw from anywhere behind the front of the board.
- Teams take turns throwing until all eight bags have been thrown.
- If the bag hits the ground and then bounces in it doesn't count. According to official rules, once the bag has touched the ground it is out of play.
- Rounds continue until one team makes the least 21 points.
The American Cornhole Association
The American Cornhole Association has been formed to make others aware of the sport and its rules. People can join the organization for free and they intend to keep it that way by selling merchandise like T-shirts with the slogan: "Play Cornhole: It's Not What You Think!" The association now has over 20,000 members playing in all 50 states and 16 countries. American troops are even playing the game in Iraq.
Oh, and get ready for the movie! That's right, a movie is being made about cornhole. Film producers in Los Angeles will be editing "Cornhole: The Movie," which was filmed in Cincinnati a few months ago. According to a news clipping I read, the movie follows four fictitious cornhole teams to Cincinnati, where they compete at a tournament with about 40 local cornholers who played in the movie.
